Confession of a Shopaholic

It’s been a little over a week since I started therapy. It’s not easy. I thought I could play around it but I can’t. The first step was to give away all my credit/debit cards. I canceled the MasterCard and the Mini-Visa. I asked them to lower my Visa limit. Why would a 24 year old need over a 6000 KD limit anyway? I wasn’t worried; I still had my American credit cards, my British debit card, and my parent’s Visa. It took less than 24 hours when he came to my office and asked for all my credit/debt cards. I was given my NBK debt card only. I couldn’t withdraw cash nor pay for anything prior his approval. I had to give him my online banking information; after all, I cannot be trusted with money.

I have to learn a lot, he keeps telling me. He came with me grocery shopping and monitored what I bought. I usually spend 25-30 KD on my groceries every week. This week, I bought same stuff for less than 7 KD. Lesson 1 learned, you can always shop for less.

It’s been 5 days since I browsed through any shopping website. I’m very tempted to browse. I explained to him that browsing doesn’t necessary mean I am buying. I don’t have a credit card to purchase anything anyway. He disagreed. I am not allowed to do those stuff anymore. I cannot have my Starbucks Latte every morning; instead, I have to prepare my own Starbucks coffee at the office.

It’s hard. I, sometimes, feel cheap but I have to stick to the plan. I have to.

I can imagine how you feel bout gettin off the shop addiction, I think I hear my heart crunch in dissapointment and rebellion when I force myself to turn away..

Good luck with the new job too..

Shopa, I go in a group and eat as much as we want then the total is split over all and you end up paying 1/4 the amount you would have paid for ordering one order of each item, so yeah, by going to Edo. :P

God I know what you are going through! I am a former shopaholic like you and I went through that phase. I have to admit I still have an issue where I cannot control buying things at stores if I have cash in my pocket! Whether it was for me or for a friend I usually tend to spend all the cash I have in my wallet!

Good luck and I wish you all the best!

    jacqui,
Tell me about it! I actully bought 4 tops last weekend and charged them to mom’s credit card, he made me give her back the money and detucted it from my weekly allowance. I can’t even buy shampoo now because of that.

    jitterbug,
    welcome around dear, thanks.

    purg,
but I hate Sushi, although the person I went with to Edo made me tempted to try some ;P

    stallion,
I know, I keep buying stuff I don’t want, or think that this would look great on a certain friend and by the end of the day I am broke.

I used to shop like crazy and felt deep regret later on
but now, i find a new way to shop
I search for the cheapest price
and open a retail factory outlet,
thats cool, all friends come and buy the stuffs from me, i even deliver
Buy more, and then sell them
try it, you wont feel sorry for shopping a lot

shopa, i understand how hard it is, my husband did something so annoying, we have a shared bank account, however he has these text alerts on his mobile so everytime i make a transaction he knows about it, he has now told me that i can only buy 1 designer bag every 6 months, he did it after i got spy bag lol, that was enough therapy for me shopa . . .

btw lol will u change ur blog name then?

im proud of u :* I know it will be hard… but we gotta do it!

I used to be £4000 in debt, and basically lived off 150kd per month until I paid it all off….. and now I have and the weight has lifted off my shoulder

One Q… why are u doing this :P

  24. 24 N. Apr 6th, 2006 at 7:34 pm

I found your blog randomly before and read certain posts of yours, though didnt finish..U dont have to beleive it, but I studied a little psychology and as for cronichle shopping, it is usually a sign for…well, I dont say empty life, but it indicates, that the person misses something, he or she tries to fill a gap. I wont even tell u, what did Freud said about this, but it is interesting.
Perhaps you should just try to look into your life, revise everything, instead of such harsh “diet”-the best remedy to decrease this habit is to know, why do you have it.
