So I had this discussion over lunch with one of my Kuwaiti male friends about the newly passed law of granting the Kuwaiti woman her right to vote in “al-baladi”. To clarify matters, this friend of mine is supposedly pro-women rights. However, he wasn’t very happy with the news! He thinks that “it is not the right time and by granting women their rights, religious people and Bedouins will take over the country.” I replied back that they are in power now anyway. He didn’t seem very convince. His other reason was that there are other important issues that needs to be addressed and acted upon first such as “ta3del al dawe`er”.
I agreed that this is a very important issue but I don’t see how women should not get their rights until “aldawe`er” has been changed! To make a long story short, he ended the discussion by making fun of my friend & myself when we did our signature campaign in Abdullah Alsalem area last month, and about what he called a “stupid” rally infront of the national assembly on March 7th. He actually wanted us to do both but not in favour of women’s rights, however for the sake of “ta3del Aldawe’er”.
Now, I think this is very funny, coming out from a person who believes so much in something, “ta3del Aldawer” yet he stays home and not do anything about it. On the other hand he makes fun of people who really believes in something and have been working very hard to achieve it. How ironic, No?
Hey, first welcome to the blogging world.
Second; this friend of yours is like any other hypocrite who claims that they believe in women’s right while down deep inside they don’t, if he makes fun of us, then in his own style he is underrating women. Anyway; reducing the voting areas or zones (ta3deel eldawayer) is a must and I believe it should go hand in hand with granting women their political rights. But I have to disagree with a lot of people who claim that the religious group and tribalism would increase when women start voting. Several studies have been conducted to show that the outcome would be more or less the same. But ta3deel eldawayer would definitely change the structure of the parliament. I.e.; the more in number (as some members are suggesting), the more is the likelihood of getting religious and tribal groups and visa-versa.
